How Do You Find The Best Care For Your Aging Parents?

All adult children want to find the best care for their aging loved ones. How can you do this? The first step is to decide what type of housing can support your loved one's needs. Find out whether the home is still safe for your parents. If it is not, decide what type of living would be the best for them.

Is the home safe?

If your parents are living at home, they may want to stay there forever. But it does not mean that home is the best place for them. Check whether the home is absolutely safe for them. (If you are unable to decide this yourself, you can hire a geriatric care manager who can help you assess the caregiving needs of your loved ones and plan the ways to meet them). Look at how your parents function. Are they able to cook and manage medications on their own? Is there anyone to help your loved ones in the event of a medical emergency? Will minor modifications to your home, such as adding grab bars or removing slippery throw rugs, help? If yes, are you ready to modify your home and make it more senior friendly? If the answer to any of these questions is 'no', it is better to move your elderly parents to an assisted living community.

The Assisted Living Option

An assisted living community is a thriving, vibrant and safe environment where elderly people can live an independent lifestyle while receiving support with their necessary daily activities. These activities of daily living may include bathing, dressing, toileting, cooking, mobility, medication administration and more. There will be trained staff members to help the elderly perform these daily tasks safely.

Although your parents want to remain in the home, allowing to do that may not be in their best interest. A senior in declining health often put other family members under tremendous stress. Additionally, it can be isolating and lonely for a senior to stay at home. All these problems can be solved by moving them to a good assisted living community.

Assisted living can provide the residents with security and comfort while encouraging them to live their lives without giving up independence and dignity. The major services offered at an assisted living community include:

  • Social events
  • Dining services
  • Housekeeping
  • Transportation
  • Wellness programs
  • Support services

Nursing homes or assisted living, which would be better?

You will get the answer to this question by understanding the difference between a nursing home and an assisted living community. The main difference is that nursing homes are more hospital-like while assisted living facilities are more home-like. Nursing home residents sleep in a single or shared room with separate dining and communal living areas. Typically, activities and tours are not a primary feature of nursing homes because the residents are physically or cognitively incapable to participate. On the other hand, assisted living is for relatively independent seniors who need a little assistance with their day-to-day tasks.
